In the Fenway section of Boston is a verterans memorial within the Northeastern University campus on Forsyth Street, near the Egan Research Institute. On the memorial is a quote attributed to Henry Van Dyke. The quote is as follows:
"Farewell, my friendly books;
Farewell, ye woods and streams;
The fate that calls me forward looks
To a duty beyond dreams.
- Henry Van Dyke"
The quote is from his poem, "The Peaceful Warrior." It is well worth reading the entire poem; a link to the text is included below.
Henry Van Dyke lived from 1852 to 1933. He graduated from Princeton University Theological Seminary, was a professor at Princeton, a Minister for President Wilson to the Netherlands, and a poet. He contributed to several religious works, including Christmas stories and words to hyms (including words, "Joyful, joyful we adore thee..." sung to the tune of a movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony).
The Veterans Memorial is a monument to the alumni of Northeastern University who fought in U.S. wars. There are pictures etched in the stone, as well as names and information etched in metal plates that are similar to 'dog tags.'
