Mukdahan (Muk) is a provincial capital city, in north eastern Thailand, that rests on the shores of the Mekong River, directly opposite of the Laos provincial capital city of Savannakhet (Sav). As one would expect there is a ferry terminal in Muk linking the two cities.

The Muk ferry port is a substantial, though relatively small building. One enters and is immediately confronted with a ticket booth, and then an immigration checkpoint, next a corner and one is walking down into the waiting ferry. That is to say, one is walking to the ferry if one is not a farang (a westerner). Farang are not allowed to use the ferry service to enter Laos from Mukdahan. Westerners are required to use the bridge to reach Laos from Muk.

The one and a half kilometre journey across the Mekong would be a pleasant trip. Thais make this crossing in order to meet relatives, to bask in the cultural synergies inherent in foreign travel, and to gamble away a months income in the Sav casino (gambling being illegal in Thailand).
