Yorkville Library is one of the oldest and nicest libraries in the Toronto Public Library system.

This library at 22 Yorkville Avenue is the oldest library in Toronto. It was built with a 1903 grant from the Carnegie Corporation. This is a busy area of Toronto and this library gets a lot of use from the people living and working in the area.

The history of this library:

"1903 - Carnegie Corporation of New York granted $350,000 to TPL for a new central library and 3 branch buildings. Toronto's Carnegie Libraries - Yorkville

1904 - Site acquired, north side of Yorkville Avenue near Yonge Street.

1907 - Northern Branch closed 1 June. Relocated to Yorkville Branch, opened 13 June. Robert McCallum, City Architect.

1973 - Listed on Toronto Historical Board's Inventory of Heritage Properties, adopted by City Council, 20 June.

1978 - Renovation by Barton Myers Associates.

1991 - Closed for carpet replacement and minor improvements on 18 November to 31 December.

1994 - Hours reduced from 60.5 to 53 per week starting 24 May.

2007 - Yorkville celebrates its 100th anniversary with celebrations that include the presentation of an historical plaque by Heritage Toronto, in partnership with Toronto Public Library, 16 June. Plaque text (PDF)

2009 - Closed for branch revitalization and Self-checkout installation (RFID) on 12 December.

2010 - Re-opened 21 January. G. Bruce Stratton Architects Inc. New hours in January. Hours increased from 53 to 62 per week."
