They homesteaded 10 miles southwest of present day Garretson and lived in two sod houses in 11 years. In 1884 a 2 room structure was added to the sod house. by 1896 two more framed wooden structures replaced the "soddie" and enlarged the house. The Berdahls son James was attending school at Augustana Academy in Canton and often brought home a friend by the name of Ole Rolvaag. Ole listened to the stories of the Berdahls and eventually became a famous novelist in which he wrote about the struggles of the men and women who settled in the northern plains.
