Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) was a Danish author of children's stories and a poet. In his lifetime he achieved wide acclaim for his stories; the most famous of which are "The Little Mermaid", "Thumbelina", and "The Ugly Duckling". His stories have been translated into more than 150 languages and have been the subjects of animated films( "The Ugly Duckling"), songs ("Thumbelina") and even a ballet "The Little Mermaid".
In 2005, the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of his birth. Many nations issued commemorative stamps in his honor, some of which depicted statues of Hans Christian Andersen that have been erected around the world.
