This was a restaurant originally built and ran by the Simerson Family in 1964 who owned the entire 50 acre tract of land that this establishment cornered. Hamburgers at this restaurant in 1964 cost $0.15 a piece.
The large purple cow head was purchased as an entire cow statue from Monticello Dairy in Charlottesville, Virginia. The head of this statue has sat on an approximately 20 foot tower since the mid 60's and continues to be not only a landmark but a point of reference for many travelers.
This location has been occupied by many businesses over the years including a number of restaurants, an ice cream parlor, a used car dealership and even a tanning salon! No matter what the business or the name the purple cow has and will remain the focal point of this location.
In the 90's the State of Virginia incorporated a new 911 system. The purple cow statue was such a prominent landmark that they decided to give this section of state route 619 the 911 name of "Purple Cow Road".
You can use Google maps, zoomed in to street level and view this waymark, the address is 10 Purple Cow Road, Waynesboro, Va. 22980.
