Originally located in Melbourne, Iowa, the Plymouth county seat was moved to LeMars in 1872. The next building was constructed in 1874 for $3,000, but the present red sandstone building was constructed in 1902 to accommodate the growing population. Architects were Miller,Emil, Kinney & Detweiler. The courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 (#81000263).
