The "Whacky Shack" located in Waldameer Park, Erie PA is a wonderful example of a Bill Tracey designed ride. Waldameer wanted to replace an earlier Dark Ride, "Fun in the Dark". The "Whacky-Shack" was one of three of Mr. Tracey’s most popular and haunting fronts. This ride is very well known by enthusiasts for its decreasing hallways, the Giant Rat stunt, and the Skull Stunt. The Whacky Shack was built in 1971 and has changed little over the years.
The Whacky Shack and Pirate's Cove, another Bill Tracey designed attraction, have won numerous darkride awards from DAFE.org. Both attractions have consistently ranked in the top 10 for their respective categories (Classic Darkride and Walkthrough).
Awards:
Voted favorite classic darkride by DAFE in 2001.
Voted #3 favorite darkride by DAFE in 2006, and 2008.
Voted #4 favorite darkride by DAFE in 2003.
