The Diamond Head Lighthouse located directly below Diamond Head Volcano at the base of a steep coastal cliff. A forty foot tall, iron framework, lighthouse was originally built on this spot in 1899. It was replaced by the current reinforced concrete structure in 1917. The original Fresnel lens, from 1899, is still used today.
The lighthouse is 55 feet high and is 147 feet above sea level. Its 60,000 candlepower Fresnel lens projects its light 18 miles out to sea. The lighthouse is completely automated and has back up battery power in the event of a power outage. The light keeper quarters now is the residence of the 14th Coast Guard District Commander.
The stamp was issued by the United States in 2007 as part of a four stamp set depicting Pacific Coast Lighthouses.
