Eight years after the orphanage was opened there was a fire and it was completely destroyed. For the next year children were shuttled to different places around South Dakota. Mother M. Raphael McCarthy proposed to the city of Sioux Falls that it act as a sponsoring agent to obtain funds for a new orphanage. In 1940 a newly constructed building opened.
For almost 3 decades voluntary donations enabled the Sisters to take care of 80 children daily from ages 3 to 15 years.
