Known by locals and tourists as the Gardner Cabin, this historical log cabin is a popular historic landmark in Arnolds Park. The nine members of the Rowland Gardner family traveled from New York and then Ohio by covered wagon arriving near Spirit Lake in 1856. The Indian massacre led by Sioux tribal leader Inkpaduta the following year killed most of the family; two children, Abbie and Eliza, were captured. Abbie returned to the cabin in 1891 and stayed there until her death in 1921. The Ladies of the Lake Chapter of the D.A.R. placed a marker on the grounds in 1928. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 (#73000724).
