Laurel Creek Falls is a popular hiking destination near the Appalachian Trail in Carter County, Tennessee.
The falls are classifyed as a cascade type water fall. Laurel Creek has cut a winding path and deep gorge through the bedrock of the mountains on it's way to the Doe River. Much of the trail is an old Rail Bed where East Tennessee and Western North Carolina cut through the mountain tops and spanned the gorges with trestles to set up a narrow gauge railroad to haul processed iron smelted from magnetite ore found in Cranberry, NC for distribution out of Johnson City, TN. Daily freight and passenger service started in 1882.
