Aan de Breestraat staat de oude renaissancegevel uit 1600, ontworpen door Lieven de Key, de stadssteenhouwer van Haarlem. Aan de zijde van de Nieuwe Rijn / Vismarkt ligt het vernieuwde stadhuis dat in 1932 werd ontworpen door architect C.J. Blaauw, na een verwoestende brand op 12 februari 1929. Een ontwerp van Dudok werd afgewezen. Doordat de brand veel panden aan de Vismarkt verwoestte kon aan deze zijde worden uitgebreid en een pleinruimte (Stadhuisplein) worden gecreëerd. In de ruimten onder het stadhuis aan het plein is nu een restaurant en uitgaansgelegenheid gevestigd.
Tot de brand van 1929 werd de eenheid van de Rijnlandse roede vast door de afstand tussen twee inkepingen bij de ingang van het stadhuis. Na de herbouw zijn twee ijzeren knoppen ter vervanging aangebracht.
English abstract
The old Renaissance facade of 1600, was designed by Lieven de Key. Behind this facade the new city hall was designed by architect CJ Blaauw, in 1932 after a devastating fire on February 12th, 1929. A draft of an other famous Dutch architect Dudok was rejected.
