In Boston's West End neighborhood, along Friend Street and within sight of the "TD Garden" sports arena, is the Friend Street Hostel.
Opened in April of 2011, just two months before the visit to the site, this place is still making renovations inside to make it fully functional. According to the web site (August 2011), there were in the midst of building the reception desk and Internet cafe, and lounge on the first floor.
Since the place recently opened, you can bet the facilities such as coin-operated laundry machines and beds are in very good condition. The gallery on the site shows what the inside looks like - and the enjoyment that people are having there.
There wasn't a figure for the number of beds available, but there is at least a women's room of 10 beds, a male room of 10 beds, a mixed room of 10 beds and a mixed room of 6 bed. There is also a double-bed and a three bed private room (38 beds, total). Other amenities (from the web site) include:
-24-Hour Front Desk
-Large Safe Lockers Beside Beds
-Vending Machines
-Coin Operated Laundry Facilites
-Travel Information and Maps
-Mac Internet Terminals
-Events & Message Board
-Free Wi-Fi
-Common Room with Games
-No Curfew
-Guest Kitchen
-Microwave
-Coffee & Tea All Day
-Satellite TV & Free Movies
-Free Linen & Blanket
-Free Breakfast
-Free & Budget Weekly Events
Rates are currently $43/person per night for the common rooms and $120 for the double bed private room and $150 for the three bed room (August 2011). While this is about the rate for a budget hotel - in the suburbs, compared to hotel rates in Boston of $200+, it's a bargain. And it comes with breakfast!
The place is centrally located in the city. It is close to all the MBTA subway station stops (red, blue, green, and orange), as well as many bus lines. It is also easy to walk to many places, including the North End, Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, U.S.S. Constitution, TD Garden, and Boston Common. Fenway Park is walkable, but it would be at least three miles, one way - take the green line.
The rating for crime is not for anything in particular, but the place is located in an urban environment. While Boston is a pretty safe city to walk around at night, it is advisable to walk in groups if you are not familiar with the area. Plus, there are the occasional insensitive drunks from the bars, especially after a Boston Celtics or Bruins game.
It looks like a nice cosy place to get friendly - at the Friend Street Hostel!
