The Triton Fountain dominates the centre of City Gate Square which is also Malta’s central bus station, a well known landmark. The fountain resulting from a national competition is in Neo-Baroque style and is the work of the important local sculptor Vincent Apap (1909-2003). Amongst Apap’s other well known works are the 1953 bust of Winston Churchill in the Upper Barracca Gardens and the 1964 bust of Dr. Enrico Mizzi at St John’s Square in the city. He was awarded the OBE in 1956 and his works also include sculpted busts of Princess Elizabeth (1951) and the Duke of Edinburgh (1954).
