St. Helens Park at 13th Street and 40th Avenue had a complete transformation with asphalt paths, playground equipment and picnic tables in Fall 2007. The new playground equipment has got to be the worst in the entire Vancouver area. It is absolutely pathetic! 2.50 acres. Parking.Even though you cannot see Mount St. Helens from St. Helens Terrace it is nevertheless named after Mount St. Helens. Some Indians of the Pacific Northwest variously called Mount St. Helens "Louwala-Clough, or "smoking mountain or fire mountain."
In 1792, either Capt. George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy, a seafarer and explorer, or Lieutenant Broughton, who explored the Columbia River for Capt. Vancouver, named the mountain St. Helens in honor of a fellow countryman, Alleyne Fitzherbert, who held the title Baron St. Helens and who was at the time the British Ambassador to Spain. Three other mountains (volcanoes) in the Cascades, Mount Baker, Mount Hood and Mount Rainier, were named for British naval officers at that time.
