In 1909 the Carnegie funds were sought and $10,000 was allotted to El Centro. The construction was delayed because the originals plans were not liked.
After an earthquake in 1920, the look of the library changed. The library was retrofitted and the outside was plastered over and given a modern look. The pastel colors and sharp edges are still part of the library's facade.
