The pedestal and figure for this 23 foot high Barre (VT) granite monument was designed and supplied by the Stephen Maslen Corporation of Hartford, CT. The cost was $2,700. The dedication took place on October 17, 1888. It is centrally located on the town green at the intersection of Main Street (Route 159) and Mountain Road (Route 168).
The figure is holding his rifle vertically while facing south; to where many of the important battles of the Civil War took place. Around the base of the figure is a somewhat unusual band of stars.
The monument is dedicated to those from Suffield who died in Civil War service.
Inscribed on the front panel of the pedestal:
SUFFIELD
ERECTS THIS MEMORIAL
IN HONOR OF
HER CITIZEN SOLDIERS,
WHO DIED
SERVING THEIR COUNTRY,
THAT THE UNION
MIGHT BE PRESERVED.
