The Oriental Pearl Tower is a TV tower located at the tip of Lujiazui, the financial district of Pudong, Shanghai. It stands at the bank of the Huangpu river, opposite The Bund, rising to a height of 468 metres. This makes it one of the highest towers in the world.
It was designed by the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. Construction started in 1991, completion was in 1995.
The tower consists of 11 spheres, big and small. The two biggest have diameters of 50 metres (bottom one) and 45 metres (top one). They are linked by three tubular columns, each 9 metres in diameter. The smallest sphere at the top of the tower measures 14 metres diametrical.
There are three observation levels. The highest is called the Space Module and is located at 350 metres. The lower ones are Sightseeing Floor at 263 m and Space City at 90 m. They allow for open-air viewing.
The antenna on top of the tower is 118 metres high but, obviously, not publicly accessible. It helps distribute radio and television broadcasts in a large part of the city.
Because of the fantastic views from the observation levels it attracts millions of visitors each year.
