Acquired by donation to the factory in 1878, the lands of William Scott (9 acres) and the notary Melchior Prévost (3 acres) allowed the King of the North to realize his dream. The cemetery, located one mile from the church received its first remains in 1886.
According to the wishes of Labelle, a chapel was built in 1887 in the center of the cemetery. Apart from the enhancement of the structure in 1840 on a new basis and the reconstruction of the steeple in 2000, the chapel retains its original character.
Father Labelle
At the funeral in January 1891 of Labelle, over 10,000 people attended the event. I suggest writing of the time you describe the scene: "The cemetery, which had just been installed by the intelligent care of Labelle, the cemetery which was his pride, welcomed the snow with her pretty Way of the Cross, his great ordeal in which the characters seem even more weeping in this day of mourning. "
Father Labelle was buried in the chapel. It is now surrounded by the clergy of the diocese of St. Jerome. Canon Paul Labelle, chronicler of history at St. Jerome is on the right side of his great-cousin. Note that the mother of Father Labelle is buried on the right side of the chapel (west).
Evolution
The first lots were divided in 1886 along the aisle or the path that leads to the chapel but also in the block west (toward the pine forest and the mass grave).
Monuments, wooden crosses and headstones from the early cemetery have all but disappeared. Still, there are still monuments on the presence of bodies buried. In its management of the cemetery in 1936, Mr. Roger Boivin proceeded to the numbering of the lots by creating a register of burials. The current head of the cemetery, his son succeeded him in Gaétan 1972.Il depuis1958 attended his father when he was only 14 years. He witnessed the development of working methods.
In the past, all the work was done by hand. It was not until 1965 that began the use of a tractor for the maintenance of the cemetery. The Boivin abandoned the pick and shovel to a backhoe in 1969.
This is the Labelle who gave the kickoff to the festival of the cemetery in 1887. The original celebration was called Feast of the ordeal. Bishop Dubois in 1942, then pastor of the parish, replaced the ordeal (built at the same time as the chapel) saw its degradation. He built a cave like that of Lourdes. It was here that is still celebrated Mass on the feast of the cemetery
