Knebworth House is the ancestral home of the Lytton family.

In 1490 Sir Robert Lytton purchased Knebworth and transformed it from a gatehouse into a red brick tudor manor house. The house remained substantially unaltered until 1810, when Mrs Elizabeth Bulwer-Lytton demolished three sides of the house, covering the remaining wing in stucco. Her son, Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, the novelist and playwright, went further and embellished the outside of the house in an eccentric gothic style.

The house is a curious mixture of features, with domes, turrets, griffins and gargoyles. Further additions followed by the first Earl of Lytton and the second Earl of Lytton re-fashioned the interior using the expertise of his brother in law, Sir Edwin Lutyens.

There are gargoyles everywhere on top of the domes and the tops of the walls. You choose which to photograph!
