In 2004 a £47.9 million road improvement scheme saw a new dual carriageway ring road divert traffic away from Bingley town centre.

However at the same time the road cut across pedestrian routes. To improve this situation, this new footbridge was built to allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross this busy road.

As part of a separate scheme local towns Keighley, Bingley and Shipley have come together to develop green cycle and walking routes. Most of the route travels along the Leeds Liverpool Canal, but there are then link routes into each town centre and the bus and train stations. The route is known as the Airedale Greenway.

This bridge forms the main link from the canal to Bingley Town centre. At the point it reaches the canal it joins onto an existing footbridge that crosses the canal.
