Isabelle Dube was mauled to death by a 200 pound, four year old male grizzly bear, while running on the popular Beach Trail, not far from SilverTip Golf Course near Canmore, Alberta Canada, in 2005. The bear was killed by wildlife officials the same day.

The bear, known at bear No. 99, had been known to repeatedly visit the golf course, and at the end of May 2005 had approached a woman who was photographing wildflowers. Approaching humans is considered unusual behavior for a bear, so officials had tranquilized the bear and fitted him with a monitor collar and relocated it to the Carrott Creek area near Banff National Park, but had found its way back to Canmore. Eight days after being relocated, on the morning of the attack, clubhouse manager Brian Stevens said the clubs maintenance crew had obsersved the bear back on the greens and scared it off the golf course. They watched the bear run up into the treeline above the golfcourse, but were not concerned since they often see bears on the greens.

Sometime later that morning, Dube and two friends were jogging on the trail, which was officially a closed trail, but often used by locals, and they encountered the bear. Dube chose to climb a tree while her two friends backed down the trail and ran for help. Dube was mauled.
Dube, who was 36 years old, was married and left behind her husband a 5 year old daughter. She was a competitive mountain biker. Dube and her biking partner came third in a seven-day, 600-kilometre bike race in 2004.

An Alberta Sustainable Resource Development spokesperson told reporters that "The range of options might involve leaving a bear in place, relocating it inside its range, relocating it outside its range, or putting the bear down," and that the bear couldn’t be re-located to an area further away because the bear would be likey to die if moved to unfamiliar territory too far from its home range.
Wildlife scientists have often warned that as as communities continue to develop in the mountain habitat, such as Canmore, which is situated just outside the gates of Banff National, more confrontations between animals and humans will occur as wildlife adjusts to shrinking wilderness.
