The ancestral home to the Dukes of Marlborough since its completion in 1722 this enormous estate carries the mark of each suceeding generation. These sphinxes are part of the the formal gardnes called the water terraces.
It took five years, from 1925 to 1930 for the Water Terraces to be built by the 9th Duke, Charles Spencer-Churchill. The terraces have some unusual aspects, such as the lead sphinxes with the features of the 9th Duke's second Duchess.
