Thompson's grove on the west side of the Big Sioux River was the setting for picnics. Each year banks and businesses closed so the employees could attend the picnics. Special trains ran from Sioux Falls and Dell Rapids bringing people to the Grove. Over the years the crowds increased and in 1902, over 12,000 people gathered to socialize and visit with the pioneers of Minnehaha County.
The last picnic was held at Elmwood Park in Sioux Falls in 1939.
