In Foxborough, along U.S. Route 1 is Gillette Stadium which was a venue for the women's FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament.
Gillette Stadium is the current home of both the New England Patriots (American) football and the New England Revolution Soccer professional teams. Both teams are contenders in their respective sports leagues. The Patriots have won the Superbowl on several occasions. The Revolution have just missed out on their national title on several occasions. But this isn't about the professional teams.
In 2003, Gillette Stadium hosted four games of the FIFA Women's World Cup tournament: two qualifying rounds and two quarterfinals. The games are listed below. The game between Sweden and Brazil was particularly exciting, since the Brazil team was heavily favored as a finalist. It might not have happened at Gillette Stadium at all, however. China was originally going to host the games. However, there was an outbreak of the SARS virus in Asia, and it was decided that since the USA had hosted the games recently, that the country would be able to best organize games on such short notice. Gillette was chosen as one of the venues. An average of 14,000 people attended each qualifying round game, and 25,000 people attended each quarterfinal game.
Gillette Stadium has also hosted 'friendly' matches with national soccer teams. Recently [2011], the current World Cup Champions, Spain played the US National Team.
The stadium is a nice venue to watch a game, whether it is a World Cup game or a league game.
