The Atouguia da Baleia Pillory is a gothic style pillory made around 1510 with a base of 4 steps (only 3 are visible), column, a chapiter decorated with the coat of arms of the Counts of Atouguia (removed after the Tavora Process - an attempted assasination of the King where the Counts of Atouguia were allegedly involved) and a decorated cone.
The pillory is in it´s original position, the central square of the old village, surrounded b y the São Leonardo Church, the former city hall and what´s left of the Atouguia Castle. In Portugal, pillorys were always located in the center of the villages because this was the place where all the people get togeter. It was a way to show the punishment to all and set an exemple.
This pillory is classified as a Public Interest Building since 1933
