Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is a private, 4-year institution, affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene. The Bethany campus originated in 1909 when the Oklahoma Orphanage downtown, became affiliated with the Church and became known as the Beulah Heights Academy and Bible School. Oklahoma Holiness College began activities on the current 40-acre campus.
A wood-slatted bench stands off the southeast corner of Marchant Alumni and Welcome Center. It welcomes passers-by to stop and sit next to a man who was loved by all who knew him. Dr. Floyd is dressed in a suit and tie and he holds a walking stick in his right hand. His left hand lying against his thigh holds a History textbook.
Dr. Fred Floyd taught History at Southern Nazarene University from 1932 to 1975. His records collection was the beginning of what is now known as the Fred Floyd Archives - records of the history of the University, the City of Bethany and the South Central Region of the Church of the Nazarene.
In a garden area to the east of the bench is a concrete slab with two bronze plaques. The left plaque reads:
"In memory of beloved professor DR. FRED FLOYD sponsor for Classes of 1937, 1952, 1957, 1961 and 1965 / Through him, hundreds of students were touched with life and hope. A man of gentleness and empathy who invested his career and his life in this place. Through this statue, we honor Dr. Floyd and all the dedicated teachers of our alma mater. Their teaching creates a tradition of excellence...bringing honor and respect to Southern Nazarene University.
"In grateful appreciation to the talent of sculptor, Scott Stearman ('75) and the vision of alumni L.D. McNall ('37) and J. David McClung ('65)."
The plaque to the right lists the major donors who made the memorial possible.
