Katherine Dunham (1909-2006) was a dancer, songwriter and choreographer. She had her own dance company for over 30 years. She is recognized as an innovator in African-American dance. She was born in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and first studied dance here in Joliet while attending high school.
Kathleen Farrell is the sculptor of this piece which depicts Dunham in the midst of a dance move that has her right leg bent and raised high in conjunction with a right arm appearing to make a sweeping motion. The same artist also made the mosaic pedestal.
The sculpture is dated 2001.
