The building was erected in 1854 as Stansted Central Hall, housing the Stansted Literary Institute. Between 1871 and 1892 the building was also used as the Post Office. In 1931 the building was acquired by the Parochial Church Council and finally, in 1969 the building became the Supreme Ballroom.
The clock is embedded in the gable above the front door to the building and is believed to be contemporary with the original construction of the building.
