On January 6, 2006, Jan Bouchal, aged 30, the chairman of non-governmental organization "Oživení" and a coordinator of the Auto*Mat project, both of which promote cycling, was hit by a car when he was cycling home from work. He died on January 12, after six days in a coma.
The ghost bike was placed at the site on January 19, during the monthly Critical Mass bike ride. The artist David Cerný designed a new monument - a silhouette of a human body fallen off a bicycle, which would be painted on the road. However, the project was stopped by the Traffic Department of the Prague Municipality - ironically, they argued that it would make the drivers slow down...
