This King...and the adjacent Queen are sculptures by artist, Brian Swanson. The pieces serve as the center for chess tables (and other games)that surround them.
The plaques at the site indicates that the works were commissioned by Art at the Stations, Inc.
The RTD website (
visit link) informs us:
"King and Queen
Brian Swanson
Dedication Date: 2001
Two statues of chess pieces double as benches and game tables. The sculptures are composed of found objects combined with stock steel shapes such as bar, sheet and woven wire cloth. The found objects are most often components of machine tools, appliances, automotive, agricultural and hand tools. These sculptures stand outside the south entrance to Market Street Station."
