Smithsonian Art Inventory Description: "A full-length, standing figure of Father Junipero Serra, the Franciscan missionary who founded the California missions. He is dressed in a full-length, hooded robe and holds a cross in both hands before his chest. On the concrete base before the figure is a bronze map of California mounted on marble. The locations of the nine missions founded by Father Serra are indicated on the map. The nine missions are also identified on circular medallions mounted on a circular walkway surrounding the sculpture."

Smithsonian Art Inventory Inscription: "(On plaque at back of base:) THE FATHER SERRA/MONUMENT/IS A DESIGN AND WORK BY/MAURICE LORIAUX/1945 unsigned"

Another plaque a short distance away from the statue reads: "Dedicated to the memory of Father Junipero Serra 1713-1784. The first Franciscan missionary to whom California owes its everlasting tribute--he brought civilization to our land and in deed and character he deserves a foremost place in the history of our State." Located near the statue is an El Camino Real bell.

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH:
The Smithsonian page lists the Date of the sculpture as 1945? as though there's some uncertainty about the date. However the plaque on the base of the statue lists 1945 as the statue date.
