This is the original cabin of Dorothy Molter, also known as the Root Beer Lady. The cabin used to be located deep within the BWCA Boundary Waters Canoe Area. When the BWCA was created all private individuals had to leave the area. Dorothy fought and was able to live in her cabin until her death. After her death, the cabin was moved to Ely.
Dorothy was a nurse from Chicago who came to the area as a young woman. She loved the area and lived the remainder of her life there. There is even a book written about her by local columnist Bob Cary. Far from being a hermit, Dorothy operated the Isle of the Pines Resort and was visited by hundreds of people. The museum video even has a photo of Julia Roberts who visited while on vacation at age 16. Doroty made homemade root beer and used ice she had cut from the lake in the winter. As the Dorothy Molter Museum states, the root beer's taste was inconsistent, but it was always cold.
The museum and cabin is great fun and the museum sells ice cold root beer as well and it is consistently good. Pick up a few cases of the root beer while you are in Ely.
