The Grote of Sint – Laurenskerk, in popular speech simply called the Laurenskerk or Laurens, is the time-honoured main church of Rotterdam. Built between approximately 1449 and 1525, the Laurenskerk is the only still remaining late-Gothic building from the originally medieval Rotterdam.



For many people, the Laurenskerk is the symbol of the history of Rotterdam. For instance, in the Middle Ages people could buy the Rotterdam citizenship by contributing 3000 bricks to the construction of the tower. The pictures of the heavily hit church in the Second World War and its reconstruction afterwards became symbolic for the ups and downs of the city and its inhabitants. Today as well, the Laurenskerk remains an impressing phenomenon among all the architectonic new buildings in modern ‘Manhattan on the River Meuse’
