In the center of the Trout River Plaza is a beautiful fountain with a spill bowl that's topped with a sculpture of a basking anhinga. The anhinga is a species of fish-eating bird with a 46-inch wingspan. The name "anhinga" means snake bird or devil bird in the Brazilian Tupi language. The name snake bird describes the anhinga's appearance when it's swimming with only its long, weaving neck visible above the water. The anhinga is not able to waterproof its feathers like a duck can, so it must spread its wings to dry them out. This is the pose depicted in the statue.
