For about seven centuries it was home to many leading aristocratic dynasties and center of the domain Hohenaschau. From the last third of the 12th Century as a medieval castle on a rocky ridge ring originated in Priental, the castle dilapidated in the 18th Century. After the extinction of the last aristocratic families in the mid-19th Century, the owners changed several times. Finally, in 1875 the industrialist Theodor von Cramer-Klett bought the castle as a country seat for his family. This was followed by extensive structural changes. Above all, his son Theodore Jr.. expanded and modernized the building from 1905 to 1908 considerably. Today the castle is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany and is used as a holiday and recreation center.
