On October 11, 1955 the deed was transferred to Nassau County Council, BSA, Inc. for the property now known as Onteora Scout Reservation. In 1956, eighty Explorers are at Onteora at the Explorer base camp for the first season of summer camp. Boy Scouts continue to camp there today, for summer camp and other year-round camping programs.

The property on which the Reservation is located has a long and rich history which begins with the Lene-Lenape indians. They used the Sun Trail to go from the Hudson River to the Delaware. Later that same trail was enlarged by John Hunter and in 1815 became known throughout the area as the Hunter Road. This road was used by many traders and farmers since it was the first road in the area. The road became the main route through what is now Onteora, and can still be readily traveled today on foot.

Onteora sits on 1400 pristine acres in the heart of the NY Catskill Forest Preserve, with elevations reaching over 2,000 feet. Orchard Lake provides both Trout fishing and water sports. Several buildings and shelters dot the property for staff, admin and program areas, and there are about 15 rustic campsites. I've camped there since 2006 with my sons & our troop from Long Island.
