Sunnyvale, now the heart of Silicon Valley, was once the center of the nation's fruit industry. Fruit trees grew for miles where industrial parks now sprawl. The Libby Company opened a cannery here in 1907 that became the world's largest within 15 years. The water tower seen here supplied the cannery with water and was even used as an aid to airplane navigation.
The cannery was such an important part of the community's identity that when the cannery was finally demolished the local historic society had no trouble saving the water tower. It is currently painted to look like a can of fruit salad, which legend has it was invented here.
