Agawam was settled in 1636 but became a town in 1855. Once, it was part of the original settlement of Springfield, MA. It then became part of West Springfield and finally an independent town in 1855.

When the town population grew and required a new school, the old town hall, located on Main and School Streets, was torn down to make way for the Benjamin J. Phelps School. A new town hall was then built at the present location, about two mile north on 36 Main St. The new building was dedicated on April 20, 1942.

This handsome building is in the Georgian style. It has a hipped roof, is two storeys high, and has symmetrically placed paned windows. Above the door is a pediment with an open scroll design and a pineapple in the center. The pineapple is a Colonial American symbol of friendship and hospitality.
