The FIRST Deans of Clark College were Robert T. Oliver and Lewis D. Cannell. L. M. Hidden house at W. 13th Street was the original home of Clark College, the "Harvard of the West Coast," from 1933 through 1937.The L. M. Hidden house was built of Hidden hand-made bricks in 1884-1885. The house was long and narrow, patterned after a row-style town house rather than a single family residence. Stained glass panels and shutters highlight tall, double hung windows. The original small porch was replaced in 1910 by the large open veranda.
Clark College was founded as a private, two-year junior college in 1933 and was granted initial accreditation in 1936-37 based upon a visit by a committee of five professors from the University of Washington.
The historic Hidden House served as the first campus for Clark College through 1937.
Clark College is located now on an 80-acre campus in Vancouver's Central Park. Washington State University branch campus was established in Vancouver's Salmon Creek area in 1989.
