The mosaic explores major environmental issues, and uses the wisdom of Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai as inspiration. Imagery depicts loss of habitat, human population history, ocean life, and rainforest. Five classes of art students created sculptural detail. Creative writing students wrote text on endangered species. There is a Network Arts tile and a Rohm and Haas who generosity made the mural/mosaic possible. Network Arts has produces many gorgeous murals/mosiacs in our public school system (School District of Philadelphia) and have been a valuable educational resource for our city children.

From their website: NetworkArts uses mosaics as a language of learning and as a tool to help children value themselves and their communities. First imagine in-depth educational programs that range from hard-core science exploration and the environment to arts and the humanities. Now imagine thousands of children taking what they have learned and creating pieces of art that literally transform their communities. Feel the pride as they contribute to long-lasting pieces of art that will enrich their communities for ages. Experience the warm connection and strong rapport as children, teachers, and volunteers of all ages work together. This is the NetworkArts magic. SOURCE

The Frankford High school building is a jewel which largely goes unnoticed. The details found here and incorporated into the fabric of the school would never be found in a modern school are definitely worth a look see. When I visited I saw two sets of stained glass windows, other murals, a cool fountain/mosaic, fantastic woodwork and trim and huge, lofty ceilings. It was quite an experience walking through the halls. stained glass windows, murals, high ceilings, beautiful woodwork. The pipe organ is one of Frankford’s hidden treasures.
