Capt. Charles Manwaring Civil War soldier's grave - Out of Place Graves on Waymarking.com

A fresh new gravestone and white picket fence mark the
grave of Union soldier Charles C. Manwaring, who has become
a bit of a hero in Hermann, Missouri, a picturesque Missouri
River town founded by German emigrants.(his original broken marker lies on theground behind the new marker)

Another monument is also in this small homestead cemetery of early
settler Charles Teubner. He and his wife are also buried here.

Charles Teubner died first. His wife's brother came to help his
sister with the property. His name was George Husmann, who
today is known worldwide as a famous vintner for his work in
Missouri and California's Napa Valley.

Charles Manwaring joined the Teubner/Husmann family wine
business in 1858 and lived on the property. Thus, it makes
sense that he would be buried at this little hillside
cemetery. Hussmann, and Manwaring's widow and son are buried
in Napa, California.

In June,2011 I returned to the little cemetery to observe the
Union Pacific's steam locomotive #844 excursion train head out of Hermann looking down from the big hill. It is a great location to observe the dual tracks and double S curves with the town in the background. You can also see 4 counties from that vantage point.


Eli McDonald, my host on that day we observed the steam train,will portray Manwaring in Civil War Sesquicentennial event in September 24-25, 2011. There will be ceremonies both in Hermann and at Manwaring's grave site.

The property is now owned by the Dierberg Foundation. Its
mission is to promote the German heritage of farming and grape
growing in the Missouri River valley. It is known as the
Hermann Farm and has its own educational website.

Finally, make the trip up the hill. The view is spectacular. A foot trail from the road and parking lot leads to the top.
