The botanical garden of the University of Basel is located close to the historic center between Spalen Gate and the University library. It was founded in 1589, so it is one of the oldest in the world; but this was at another location, it moved to the current location in 1898.
It has four greenhouses: the Victoria house, a tropical greenhouse, one for succulents and a hibernation greenhouse for potted plants that are outdoors in the warmer season.
The most interesting greenhouse from an architectural point of view is the Victoria house. It was built in 1898 and carefully renovated in 1996. Although the style is somewhat Victorian, this is not the reason for the name. It was designed to hold the giant Amazonian water lily "Victoria regia".
