"Leon High School's mascot is the Lion, and their colors are red and white. Leon has thirty-four athletic teams: sixteen boys teams and eighteen girls teams. The boys football team is the winningest football team in the state of Florida."

According to a plaque on a brick fence post near the statue, the lion's name is "Leon" and the statue was a gift from the Class of 1957 on the occasion of their 50th class reunion on April 27, 2007.
