The god of wisdom, and getting out of tricky situations, is a god to respect! This is Ganesh, the easily recognisable elephant headed god of the Hindu pantheon of deities. While based in India, he is a popular deity in south east Asia, and certainly in Thailand, both as a distinct Hindu god, and as an associate of the Buddha. His image to be found frequently throughout the Kingdom.
This statue is to be found in the far, far southern Thai city (the most southerly in the Kingdom) of Narathiwat, and it was a surprise find. I was visiting the Mongkol Piphit Hill Shrine. After speaking to a woman, who seemed to be managing the shrine, she took me to a side door, which opened onto a walled, open area. Inside is a statue of Ganesh, still under construction, but largely complete. This statue and its surrounds is surprisingly well attractive.
If you do happen to find yourself here, in the 'deep south' of Thailand, and have an interest in Eastern religion, make you sure pay a visit to both the shrine and the statue of Ganesh.
ADVISORY: For the last few years and decades there has been an ongoing insurgency in the Muslim populated provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (the 'deep south' of Thailand). An average of 600 people (out of a pop. of 1.6 million) have been killed per year between 2004-9. The Australian government strongly urges its citizens not to visit these provinces: "do not travel". Having said all of this there is no blood on the streets, and life goes on normally for the vast majority of people. You have been advised.
Associated Religion(s): Hindu.
