This is one of the few Buddhist wats in this largely Muslim city and province. I was told that this was the major wat within the city limits. I cannot confirm that, but it was the largest and best maintained wat in the city.
The Wat has the usual array of buildings, including a prayer hall and quarters for monks. There is also a school on the Wat grounds, from which I heard the sound of many children chanting Buddhist songs. The grounds also contain children's playground equipment. Unusually, the entrance to the Wat buildings were locked and bolted. I can only suggest that the security situation described below prompted this.
I could not find an English version of the Wat name, thus I transliterated the name into English.
ADVISORY: For the last few years and decades there has been an ongoing insurgency in the Muslim populated provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (the 'deep south' of Thailand). An average of 600 people (out of a pop. of 1.6 million) have been killed per year between 2004-9. The Australian government strongly urges its citizens not to visit these provinces: "do not travel". Having said all of this there is no blood on the streets, and life goes on normally for the vast majority of people. You have been advised.
