The city of Freeport welcome sign depicts an anchor placed over the state of Florida with the sun and the water in the background. The anchor is a reminder of the city's history. A real anchor is also located in a fountain in the center of Freeport, again as a reminder of the city's history.

The following information about the anchor and the fountain is from the May 27, 2009, Freeport Post (visit link):

"About 150 years ago, Freeport was settled in this location, once called Genoa. People got here by trails and horseback, so supplies were shipped in by boat. During that period, the boats were steam driven with paddle wheels on the rear for propulsion. Boats came up Four Mile Creek to unload supplies. At that time, the main part of town was along the banks of the creek. So we were a maritime community. We depended upon boats to support the community.

The anchor in the triangle is a reminder of where we came from. The anchor was found in Choctawhatchee Bay by Mr. Conley Martin and his brother Donnie. He donated it to the City approximately 40 years ago. At a later time, the Freeport Town Planters built the pond and mounted the anchor in it. It looks nice and helps preserve some of our heritage.

Around 1992, the City held a contest to design a logo for us. We had about ten or so entrees. The one selected was drawn by a 10 year old young man named Travis Hollington. The logo was selected because it was drawn with an anchor placed over the state of Florida and shows the sun and the water."
