In 1956, the founder of Alpenrose Dairy originally built a ball field for the grandchildren to play on. A few years later, some of the kids started making their own dirt bicycle track nearby. The track was an irregular oval, winding through trees and blackberry thickets. This rapidly turned out to be the most popular bike trail in town, and soon racing was organized. But what was laid out on the fly by some teenagers was not suitable for larger events, and the owners decided to upgrade to a full velodrome.
The new track was opened in the summer of 1965. It was 1/6 of a mile long (now officially 268.43 meters),and the turns were banked at 43 degrees, with a 16.6 meter radius. There is a flat 50 meter warmup track inside the south turn. Set in a small natural hollow, there is grass berm seating around most of the length. The track hosts a full schedule of racing from May through October, and draws some of the largest crowds for velodrome racing in the US. The track has hosted the US national championship on multiple occasions.
