Bolton Abbey is a private estate owned by Lord Devonshire. Although owned by the Duke there is public access to many acres of his land and there are many walking trails.
The estate runs along the length of the River Wharfe, which has woods on both sides of the river. The woods also have walking paths on both sides of the river and a few bridges allow access to both sides.
This is a lovely part of the world and one of my favourite walking areas. There are a number of marked walking routes round here some of which are pushchair and wheelchair access.
For the more adventurous the Dales Way, am 84 mile long distance hiking path that goes from Ilkley to Bowness passes alongside the river.
This seat is near the Cavendish Pavilion Cafe at the start of the woods on the West side of the river. The nearest car park to here is Sandholme Car Park.
Although access to the estate is free, there roads are narrow with limited parking other than in the pay car parks. As of 2011 a day’s parking costs 6 pounds and covers all the car parks on the estate.
